On Eating Alone, Well

Anna IvarssonAnna IvarssonAugust 4, 2026 · 5 min read

For years, eating alone meant eating quickly, standing over the sink, waiting for the real meal to happen with other people, later.

Somewhere in my thirties I decided to treat a solo dinner the way I'd treat a dinner with company — a plate instead of the pan, the table instead of the counter, the good glass instead of whichever one was closest.

Eating alone isn't the absence of a dinner party. It can be its own kind of occasion.

It didn't make the food taste different. It made the evening feel like mine, rather than something I was getting through until better company arrived.
